The pros and cons of autistic perfectionism

Writer's picture: AutabilityAutability

Autistic children often seek perfection due to a combination of cognitive, sensory, and emotional factors. It can be very hard for parents and carers to try to boost self-esteem when their child is never happy with their best efforts.

Many autistic people process information in absolute terms, i.e., in black and white. Due to rigid thought patterns, they are unable to be happy with anything that doesn’t meet their pre-conceived ideas.

Many Autistic children often notice small details that others might overlook. This can make them more critical of imperfections and more determined to achieve an ideal result. In extreme cases, this level of spotting small imperfections can cause enormous frustrations.

Whilst being perfectionists can have downsides, there are also benefits to this autistic trait. Creating perfection for some autistic children can give them a sense of order and predictability, which in turn can reduce anxiety and overwhelm. Another benefit is that it allows some autistic children to achieve highly in areas of special interest, which can boost their self-esteem and also give them recognition from other pupils at school.
