More Than a Grade: Why Effort Matters More Than Results

In today’s world, it can feel like everything is measured, especially when it comes to our children. From the moment they are born, they are assessed, compared, and placed into systems that often focus more on outcomes than individuality. Nowhere is this more clear than in the UK school system, where, despite what some may say, the focus on exams is stronger than ever.
Children are taught to pass exams. Not necessarily to explore, discover, or develop a love of learning, but to meet the criteria. While having clear expectations can sometimes be helpful, it also increases the pressure. For many children, especially autistic and neurodivergent students, it can feel as though their entire worth rests on a set of test results.
But exams are just one small part of who your child is.
Take a moment, especially during exam season, to remind them of that. Celebrate their interests, their creativity, their humour, and their kindness. Look beyond the grades and notice the quiet victories that don’t always show up in a school report.
I was fortunate to attend school before the exam-focused culture really took hold. I remember the most prestigious award at my school, and it wasn’t for top marks. It was for "consistent effort." That value stayed with me, because effort tells a much deeper story than a grade ever could.
For some students, just getting into the exam hall is an achievement.
For others, trying something new, using a calming strategy, or simply showing up is a bigger success than the final score.
We might not be able to change the system overnight, but we can change the messages our children hear from us. We can show them that their value is not defined by a test result. That doing your best, whatever your best looks like, is always worth recognising.
This exam season, let’s value effort. Let’s celebrate progress in all its forms and honour every child’s unique journey.
Because at the end of the day, they are so much more than a grade.
