Laptops and exams

If you’re wondering whether your child should use a laptop for their exams, the answer depends entirely on their needs. For many autistic students, handwriting can be physically exhausting or even painful. Writing by hand for long periods takes a lot of coordination and effort, which can drain the energy they need to focus on their answers. A laptop lets them concentrate on what they’re saying, rather than struggling with a pen and paper.

There are also sensory factors to consider. The sound of a pen scratching on paper—something most people barely notice—can be overwhelming for some autistic students. On the flip side, the noise of typing might also be a challenge, so it’s important to think about what works best for your child.

Using a laptop also makes editing easier. Some students find crossing things out stressful, but being able to delete and rewrite can make all the difference. Instead of worrying about mistakes, they can focus on improving their answers.

This isn’t about giving them an unfair advantage—it’s about leveling the playing field. Just like a child with glasses needs them to see, a laptop can be the tool that allows your child to fully show what they know.

Every autistic student is different. What works for one might not work for another. But for many, a laptop in exams can be the key to making sure their grades reflect their actual knowledge, rather than the challenges they face with handwriting or sensory issues.
