How ADHD can cause and/or increase anxiety

Living with ADHD can make it hard to control impulses and hyperactivity, which can cause or increase anxiety. For children, ADHD can often lead to struggles in school, social situations, and completing everyday tasks. This can quickly make them feel overwhelmed and not good enough, as they may have trouble meeting their own and others’ expectations.

Social interactions can also be stressful when impulsive or hyperactive behaviors lead to awkward moments or misunderstandings with other kids, making it harder for children with ADHD to make friends. Over time, this can lead to feelings of rejection and may cause social anxiety.

Children with ADHD also have trouble managing their emotions, which can lead to feelings of frustration and irritability. These strong emotions can make them feel like they’re losing control and can’t handle the situation.

For some people with ADHD, anxiety is a separate problem, while for others, learning to manage ADHD symptoms can help reduce their anxiety.
