Help your teen through Valentine's Day

Writer's picture: AutabilityAutability

Valentine’s Day can feel tricky for autistic teenagers. The focus on romance and big expectations can be overwhelming. It might make them feel isolated or left out. Here are some ideas to make Valentine’s Day easier and more enjoyable:

Focus on friendships and community.

Instead of romance, encourage activities that celebrate friendship. You could organise a small gathering or event where they can socialise without feeling pressured.

Make it about appreciation.

Help your teenager find ways to show appreciation for important people in their life. This could be through a card, a kind message, or another way that feels natural and comfortable for them.

Talk openly about Valentine’s Day.

If your teenager is able, talk to them about the social expectations of Valentine’s Day. Let them know that they don’t have to take part in anything they don’t want to. It’s okay to say no. Participation is optional, and no one should pressure them.

The goal is to make Valentine’s Day a day where they feel included and supported in a way that works best for them.
