Handling success & disappointment of exams

When exams don’t go well for your autistic child, it can be really tough—for them and for you.

Autistic children often handle disappointment in their own way, and it might not look like what you expect. Some children might not seem bothered at all, even though they are upset deep down. Others might show their feelings right away. However your child reacts, it’s important they know that how they feel is okay, and that you’re there to support them.

If it's a big, formal exam, your child might need comfort and reassurance before, during, and even after the exam day. Some children seem fine at first, but become anxious again as exam day gets closer.

As a parent, it's easy to imagine the worst. But sometimes, when the results come, they’re better than expected. That can be a big relief for you—but for your child, it might take a bit of time to accept the surprise and adjust to the good news.
