Getting Help For Exams

1Our first blog in our “Study Smart, Stay Calm” series discusses getting your child’s access arrangements sorted as your first priority. It might feel like Christmas was only last week, but it’s time to start considering exam access arrangements if your child is taking formal exams this year.

What are exam access arrangements?

Some children need extra support in exams to show what they can do. These are called exam access arrangements. These changes help children with special educational needs (SEN) or disabilities to take exams in a fair way.

Some examples of help in exams include:

✔ Extra time (usually 25% more time)

✔ Breaks during the exam

✔ Using a computer or word processor

✔ Having a reader to read the questions

✔ Having a scribe to write answers

✔ Sitting in a quiet room away from others

✔ A special version of the exam paper (for example, bigger text)

How do you apply for help?

Schools must apply before the exam deadline. For GCSEs and A-levels, applications must be sent by 21st March in the year of the exam. However, it’s best to apply earlier so the child can practice using the support in mock exams. The school applies through JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications).

💡 Tip: Ask your child’s school if they have any earlier deadlines you need to know about!

What happens after you apply?

If the request is approved, the school must make sure your child gets the support they need. Your child should practice using their access arrangements before the real exam.

For example:

  • If they have extra time, they should practice using it in class tests.

  • If they have a scribe or reader, they should work with that person before the real exam.

  • If they will use a laptop, they should get used to typing their answers.

Already have exam arrangements? Check they are still right!

If your child has had support in past exams, check with the school that the arrangements still fit their needs. Needs change over time, so it’s important to review what support is best.

Where to get more help?

You can find more details on the JCQ website:🔗 www.jcq.org.uk

Also, speak to your child’s school or college to make sure everything is sorted in time.
