Exam Adjustments: Desk Position

Exam adjustments: Desk position

We are carrying on our Study Smart, Stay Calm campaign by talking about the position of the desk in an exam hall.

This adjustment does not necessarily mean that the student needs to be in an alternative room for it to work. In fact, this accommodation works brilliantly for students who don’t need in a separate room or are not comfortable with sitting their examination in a different space.

Some students may benefit from specific positioning of the desk. For example, putting the desk against a wall rather than in an open space can reduce feeling exposed and overwhelmed. Facing away from doors can reduce the disruption of people passing the door or entering.

If your child is very visual, then it might be worth requesting they have a larger desk, or two pushed together as this will allow them to arrange their materials in an organised and methodical way. This will allow them to feel more relaxed and regulated during the examination.

There are so many small changes to an examination space which can be invaluable. Many wouldn’t even require official authorisation, just an understanding SENCO and Examination Officer. Before making this request, be clear as to what you are asking for and why and how it will help your child, whilst remembering that every position in an exam hall is not the same.
